Summer Learning Loss: How to Prevent It in Broward County

February 2, 20266 min read

Every summer, families across Broward County look forward to a well-deserved break. But there is a hidden cost to a completely unstructured summer that many parents do not see until the fall: summer learning loss. As a Florida certified educator, I want to help families in Coral Springs and Coconut Creek understand what it is and how to prevent it without sacrificing the fun of summer.

What Is Summer Learning Loss

Summer learning loss, sometimes called the "summer slide," refers to the loss of academic skills that happens when students are out of school for an extended period. Research has shown that students can lose a significant portion of the reading and math skills they gained during the school year over a single summer.

The loss is cumulative. A child who slides back each summer can fall further and further behind peers over the years, and teachers often spend the first several weeks of a new school year simply reteaching forgotten material.

Why Reading and Math Are Most Affected

Reading and math are skill-based subjects, which means they require regular practice to maintain. Just like an athlete loses conditioning without training, a student loses fluency and number sense without use. Math tends to slide the most because so much of it depends on practiced procedures, while reading slides when children simply stop reading over the break.

The encouraging news is that summer learning loss is almost entirely preventable with a modest amount of consistent engagement.

Keep Reading Alive All Summer

The single most effective thing you can do is keep your child reading. This does not mean assigning hours of homework. It means making reading a natural, enjoyable part of summer:

  • Visit the Coral Springs and Coconut Creek public libraries and let your child choose books that interest them
  • Set a simple daily reading habit, even just 20 minutes
  • Read aloud together, regardless of your child's age
  • Let them read comics, magazines, or audiobooks, which all build skills
  • Talk about what they read to strengthen comprehension

Choice is powerful. A child who picks their own books reads more and enjoys it more.

Make Math Part of Everyday Life

Math practice does not have to mean worksheets. Summer is full of natural opportunities:

  • Cooking together involves fractions and measurement
  • Shopping trips involve estimating totals and calculating change
  • Planning a road trip involves distance, time, and budgeting
  • Games and puzzles build logical thinking and number sense

Twenty minutes of intentional math a few times a week is enough to keep skills sharp.

The Value of Light Structure

Children thrive on a little routine, even in summer. A loose daily rhythm that includes some reading, a bit of math, plenty of play, and time outdoors keeps minds active without making summer feel like school. The goal is consistency, not intensity.

When Tutoring Makes Sense

For students who are already behind, summer is the ideal time to catch up. Without the pressure of daily homework and tests, we can focus entirely on filling gaps and building confidence. Many Coral Springs families use the summer to get their child caught up so they start the new year ready to succeed rather than scrambling to keep up.

Summer tutoring is also a great way to prevent the slide for students who are on track. A small amount of structured practice maintains skills and builds momentum.

A Balanced Summer Is the Goal

I never recommend turning summer into year-round school. Children need rest, play, and unstructured time to recharge. The goal is balance. A summer that includes both genuine downtime and light, consistent learning gives children the best of both worlds: a real break and a strong start in the fall.
