Florida B.E.S.T. Standards Explained for Parents
If you have looked at your child's report card or assignments lately, you may have noticed references to the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards. For many parents, these standards feel like a mystery. As a Florida certified educator, I want to explain what they are, why they matter, and how you can support your child in meeting them.
What B.E.S.T. Stands For
B.E.S.T. stands for Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking. These are the academic standards that Florida adopted to define what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in subjects like English Language Arts and Mathematics. They replaced earlier standards with the goal of raising expectations and improving outcomes for Florida students.
In simple terms, the B.E.S.T. Standards are the roadmap. They tell teachers what to teach and tell families what their children are expected to learn each year.
Why Florida Created Them
The standards were designed to focus on strong foundational skills, clear progression from grade to grade, and the kind of deep thinking that prepares students for college and careers. In reading, they emphasize explicit phonics instruction in the early grades and build toward analyzing complex texts later on. In math, they prioritize fluency with core concepts before moving to more advanced applications.
This approach reflects what research tells us about how children learn best: build a solid foundation first, then layer on complexity.
What This Looks Like in Reading
In the early grades, the B.E.S.T. Standards stress phonemic awareness and phonics, meaning children learn to connect sounds to letters and decode words systematically. As students advance, the focus shifts toward fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension of increasingly challenging material.
By the upper elementary grades, students are expected to read to learn, drawing meaning and evidence from texts across subjects. A child who has a strong early foundation handles this transition smoothly, while a child with gaps often struggles.
What This Looks Like in Math
The math standards emphasize understanding, not just memorization. Students are expected to know why procedures work, not only how to perform them. Early grades focus on number sense and fluency with basic operations, while later grades build toward fractions, ratios, algebraic thinking, and problem solving.
Because each concept builds on the last, a gap in an early standard can make later math much harder. This is why staying on track matters so much.
How I Align My Tutoring to These Standards
In my tutoring, I align instruction directly to the B.E.S.T. Standards so that what we work on reinforces exactly what your child encounters in school. I identify which specific benchmarks a child has mastered and which need more support, then build a plan that closes those gaps in a logical order.
This alignment means tutoring is never disconnected from the classroom. Instead, it strengthens the same skills your child's teacher is developing, giving them a consistent and reinforcing experience.
How Parents Can Support at Home
You do not need to be an expert in the standards to help. A few simple habits go a long way:
- Read with your child daily and talk about the meaning of what you read
- Practice math through everyday activities like cooking and shopping
- Ask your child's teacher which benchmarks they are focusing on
- Celebrate effort and progress, not just grades
These small actions reinforce the standards naturally and show your child that learning matters.
Why Understanding the Standards Helps
When you understand what your child is expected to learn, you can be a more effective advocate and supporter. You will know what questions to ask at conferences, how to interpret report cards, and where your child might need extra help. Knowledge turns confusion into confidence.
